Keeping a Healthy Lifestyle on Thanksgiving

Posted on 21 Nov, 2016

On a holiday filled with delicious foods, from turkey and stuffing to mashed potatoes and gravy, it can be hard not to indulge on Thanksgiving Day. But your healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to end when the holiday season begins. What better way to burn off a few Thanksgiving calories than to go for a walk? Plus, it’s a great way to reconnect with friends and family while enjoying the outdoors. Here are a few ways you can work a walk into your day–on Thanksgiving, and beyond.

Get Outside
Did you know walking on hills burns more calories? If you live in a hilly place, like the rolling foothills of Aliento, take advantage of the terrain in your own backyard. An extensive public trail system surrounding Aliento makes it the perfect place for hiking, not to mention Aliento’s own trail, which will loop around the valley. Not only do you burn more calories walking on hills, but regularly walking up and down hills will stretch and strengthen leg muscles. Walking up flights of stairs counts, too!

Take the Long Way
If you’re running errands, either in preparation for the holiday or on any other day, try walking to the store, or parking a little further away from your destination to get in some extra steps. You can also take the stairs instead of the elevator. Take every opportunity throughout the day to do a bit more walking, and your steps (and burned calories) will begin to add up!

Bring the Family
Walking doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. Bring the whole family, pets included, along for an evening stroll. As tempting as it may be to stretch out on the sofa and take a nap after a big Thanksgiving meal, you’ll feel more energized by going for even a short walk around the neighborhood.

From the Aliento family to yours, we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving.
